Grantee: Muslim International Film Festival
Project Name: Panel Discussion and Networking Event for Muslim Filmmakers

Funding supported a panel discussion with industry guests to explore and discuss tangible steps that need to be taken for Muslim presence in the Canadian film industry, a networking event for Muslim filmmakers and industry professionals, and a private screening of an Oscar-qualifying film and post-film conversation with the filmmakers.

Project Name: Nonprofit Driven Conference 2022
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Grant Amount: $5,000  

Nonprofit Driven is an annual public policy conference. It is an important gathering for nonprofit leaders, community organizers, and policymakers to collaborate and form strategic partnerships. 

Grantee: Racial Equity Screen Office
Project Name: Operational Funding
Location: Vancouver, BC
Grant Amount: $48,000 

Inspirit funding supported research and stakeholder engagement sessions to develop strategic and operational plans, organizational staff and board infrastructure, and communications strategy. Funding also supported research for both a Best Practices Guide for working with Racialized Creatives in Canada and a Decision Maker Report that will collect data around actual decision makers in the Canadian screen industries and make recommendations to further racial equity in the sector.

Project Name: An Act of Worship Screening and Workshop
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Grant Amount: $5,000  

An Act of Worship explores the past 30 years of American history through the perspective of Muslims across the U.S. who have lived it. Funding from Inspirit supported the screening of An Act of Worship at the Reel Asian International Film Festival. Funding also supported a post-film workshop. 

Grantee: Women in View
Project Name: On Screen Report
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Grant Amount: $48,000 

Women in View On Screen Report takes a deep dive into gender representation and diversity in Canada’s English-language screen industry. Inspirit funding also supported the research of opportunities (including financial) open to women-identifying and non-binary people in creative leadership positions in Canadian feature film, dramatic television series production, and documentary development and production.

Project Name: Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week
Location: Vancouver, BC
Grant Amount: $45,000 

Inspirit funding supported the development and implementation of the 2022 edition of the Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week, which included four evenings of runway presentations by Indigenous designers, visual art installations, and a vendor market. Funding also supported the engagement and the empowerment of Indigenous youth in intergenerational mentorship with elders, panel discussions with community leaders, job shadowing, and training.

Project Name: Surviving Hate
Location: Toronto, ON
Grant Amount: $30,000 

Surviving Hate is a collaborative journalism project coordinated by Humber College’s StoryLab seeking to fill the data gap on the reporting of hate crimes and incidents in Canada, with a focus on anti-Indigenous racism. 

Grantee: Indigenous Visual Culture at OCAD University
Project Name: Nigig Residency & Celebration
Location: Toronto, ON
Grant Amount: $49,500 

The Indigenous Visual Culture program at OCAD University combines practice-specific and interdisciplinary studio-based learning, and courses in the visual, cultural, social and political history of Indigenous peoples. The Nigig Visiting Artist Residency is designed to empower Indigenous students to tell their own stories and gain technical skills they can employ to mentor, create and build vibrant, successful careers. 

Grantee: Institute of Islamic Studies
Project Name: Muslims in Canada Survey
Location: Toronto, ON
Grant Amount: $10,000 

The Institute of Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto develops research projects that fill critical gaps in society’s understanding of Islam and Muslims. By centering Islam and Muslims, the Institute offers a critical viewpoint from which we can better understand our world.

Project Name: Indigenous Heritage Circle Gathering
Location: Toronto, ON
Grant Amount: $10,000 

Inspirit funding supported an Indigenous Heritage Circle (IHC) Gathering, at National Trust’s Annual Conference, to discuss Parks Canada’s new report, Indigenous Heritage & the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Activities included IHC meetings on UNDRIP, participation of Elders and IHC leadership, IHC led panels and sessions at the Conference, and networking.  

Grantee: No Visible Trauma
Project Name: Impact Campaign
Location: Calgary, AB
Grant Amount: $35,000 

No Visible Trauma is a documentary film that investigates police brutality and accountability in Calgary, Canada. Inspirit funding supported an impact campaign around the film, which includes film screenings at post-secondary classrooms and community groups across Canada followed by panel discussions that encourage critical conversations about police accountability in their communities.

Project Name: Spotlight: Child Welfare
Location: Vancouver, BC
Grant Amount: $3,000 

The Tyee is an independent, online news magazine from B.C. devoted to fact-driven stories, reporting and analysis that informs and enlivens our democratic conversation. Spotlight: Child Welfare (SCW) is a collaborative journalism project that brings together journalists and people with lived experience of the so-called “child welfare” system. 

Grantee: We Are The Medium
Project Name: Libraire MAKTABA Bookshop
Location: Montreal, QC
Grant Amount: $45,000 

We Are The Medium is a creative and culture agency dedicated to consultancy and communication through video, music, print and visual arts. MAKTABA is a concept bookshop and boutique nestled in a heritage building in the Old Port of Montreal that carries a curated selection of books by diverse authors on a variety of subjects, for readers of all ages. Inspirit funding supported a series of conversations with key Muslim and BIPOC thinkers, content creators, and artists to engage and activate BIPOC communities in Montreal.

Project Name: Return of Our Ancestors: A Yellowhead Institute Red Paper
Location: Toronto, ON
Grant Amount: $42,500 

Yellowhead Institute is an Indigenous-led research and education centre based in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University. Yellowhead Institute Red Papers follow a tradition of agenda-making reports by Indigenous people that contribute to important conversations within and outside our communities.

Project Name: Sharing Our Stories
Location: Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, QC
Grant Amount: $50,000 

The Eastern Door is a community-based newspaper serving the community of Kahnawake. Sharing our Stories is a weekly series of stories told by Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Elders in English and the Kanien’kéha language. It is rooted in the movement to Tsi Skarihwaiénthon, to replant the traditional Kanien’kéha language, culture, and history in the community of Kahnawake and surrounding areas.

Project Name: Indigenous Journalism Teaching Fellowship

Grant Amount: $100,000 

First Nations University of Canada seeks to have an ongoing transformative impact through education based on a foundation of Indigenous Knowledge. Indigenous Communication Arts specializes in journalism and public relations. The program is focused on an introduction to the field of media.

Project Name: Episode Muslim Writers Room
Location: Montreal, QC
Grant Amount: $70,000 

Inspirit funding supported a training program for mid-tier Muslim screen-based industry writers in Canada to provide them with the necessary support to transition into more senior levels in their careers. The intensive program took six participants through eight-week training modules focused on the creative process, pitch/sales skills, intellectual property development, and entertainment industry engagement.

Black Women Film! Canada is a not-for-profit and leadership initiative dedicated to forwarding the careers, networks, and skills of filmmakers and media artists who are Black women identified in Canada.

imagineNATIVE showcases, promotes, and celebrates Canadian and international Indigenous filmmakers and media artists. imagineNATIVE is committed to a greater understanding by audiences of Indigenous peoples, cultures, and artistic expressions.

Indigenous Watchdog is a federally registered non-profit dedicated to monitoring and reporting on how reconciliation is advancing on the critical issues that are impacting the Indigenous world – including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.

Story Money Impact is a registered Canadian Charity that actively engages courageous filmmakers to refine and amplify their messages for systemic change through impact strategy, education, and partnerships with constituents.

Grant Amount: $270,000 

La Converse is a digital media outlet serving underrepresented communities in Québec. Launched as a month-long pop-up newsletter to fill an urgent need for reporting during the COVID-19 pandemic, it quickly engaged audiences and had made measurable impact across underserved communities. 

Grantee: Sacred Fire Productions

Sacred Fire Productions is an Indigenous arts organization that builds bridges between Indigenous artists and audiences of all ages and backgrounds, including urban areas, so that these artists can assert themselves, develop and live better from their art. 

Grantee: SKETCH Working Arts
Project Name: General Operating Funds

Grant Amount: $96,000 

SKETCH Working Arts is a community arts and arts education organization that engages young Queer, Trans, and Black, Indigenous, other racialized people, as well as those navigating poverty, living houseless. SKETCH provides programs to help young people build skills and capacities to become powerful change agents through arts and culture.

Grant Amount: $63,000 

Uvagut TV is Canada’s first national Inuktut television channel. It broadcasts movies, documentaries, cultural programs, current affairs shows, interviews with elders, and 5 hours of daily kids shows. Uvagut is currently available in over 600,000 homes across Canada.
