IndigiNews aims to debunk stereotypes about Indigenous communities perpetuated by media. Supported by The Discourse and Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), the first IndigiNews team was hired in April 2020 to tell stories of Indigenous communities in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia.
The media outlet has now expanded to Vancouver Island. Four new Indigenous journalists are now part of the team: Catherine (Katłįà) Lafferty, Bayleigh Marelj, Odette Auger, and Anna McKenzie. They will cover Indigenous health, education, and child welfare across the Island.
Inspirit’s grant will help IndigiNews expand further through the hiring of a full-time Indigenous editor. The editor will build staff capacity, document the decolonizing approaches of the team, and share the impact of their work.
