In June we commemorate National Indigenous History Month. During this month, Canadians take time to recognize the rich heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
In an effort to celebrate Indigenous voices, culture, and leadership, Inspirit is highlighting Indigenous-led partner organizations; they are advancing Indigenous narrative sovereignty and control over intellectual and cultural property and heritage.
- Indigenous Fashion Arts (IFA) is a non-profit organization for Indigenous-made fashion, craft and textile arts. IFA is the presenter of the Indigenous Fashion Arts Festival, a celebration of Indigenous artists and designers that connects audiences to artistic and cultural expression.
- Indigenous 150+ celebrates a new season of podcast episodes featuring a collection of pilots proposed by recent graduates of the Indigenous 150+ Advanced Digital Storytelling Program. Topics range from decolonizing motherhood to a narrative that explores travelling back in time to change history in favour of the matriarchy.
- The Indigenous Curatorial Collective / Collectif des commissaires autochtones (ICCA) is an Indigenous run and led non-profit organization that aims to support and connect fellow Indigenous curators, artists, writers, academics, and professionals through various methods of gathering.
- IndigiNews aims to create relevant, valuable, and trustworthy content by listening to the Indigenous communities they serve. Reporters cover stories from the Okanagan Valley and Vancouver Island.
- The imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival is an international hub for the presentation and celebration of Indigenous media art. It is Canada’s premier Indigenous media arts event and the largest festival of its kind in the world.
- Uvagut TV is Canada’s first national Inuktut television network. The station was launched in 2021 by Nunavut Independent Television Network, an Inuit-owned non-profit. Uvagut TV broadcasts 24/7 with over 80% of programming in Inuktut and 60% with English subtitles.
- Sacred Fire Productions is an Indigenous non-profit organization that produces and presents events for Indigenous artists with the goal of contributing to the emergence and vitality of an Indigenous cultural ecosystem that addresses the socio-economic challenges and barriers faced by Aboriginal artists and youth.
- A partnership between NATOA and SHARE, the Reconciliation and Responsible Investment Initiative works with Canadian institutional investors to promote responsible investment policies and practices that include reconciliation goals.
